Safety in Lodging – including Bloodborne Pathogens training

“Why do it?”

Hundreds of thousands of workers are exposed or potentially exposed to bloodborne pathogens in the workplace. Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms found in blood or other potentially infectious material such as body fluids that can cause disease in people. HIV the virus that causes aids is one such pathogen along with the more common hepatitis B and C viruses.

Q. “Do the bloodborne pathogen regulations apply to hotel/motel housekeeping staff?”
A. The answer is fourfold:

  1. Should housekeeping staff be trained in how to prevent an exposure incident? Then yes, it could save a life and prevent a load of headaches for the owners/managers
  2. If a member of housekeeping staff has an exposure incident must you follow the provisions of OSHA 1910.10? Again the answer is yes.
  3. Do you need to put all the housekeeping staff on your exposure plan? Probably not, unless they have specific duties that can put them in contact with bloodborne pathogens such a providing first aid.
  4. OSHA state in standard 1910.30 that you should have an exposure plan if workers have “occupational exposure”, when it comes to housekeeping staff OSHA seems to say it would be on an individual by individual basis, so you could say they do not need to be on an exposure plan as they would not be reasonably expected to be exposed, however the more incidents of exposure you have, the less credible this line becomes!

The FMT Safety in lodging course makes the implementation of an exposure plan far simpler by providing downloadable, editable, printable templates at the end of the course.
